Germany Transferred Another Patriot Air Defense System to Ukraine

The new shipment of German weapons to Ukraine also includes all-terrain vehicles, trucks and mine-clearing equipment.

Ukraine has received a second Patriot air defense system from the Bundeswehr’s reserves, according to the official list of weapons that Germany supplies to Ukraine, updated on Thursday, December 14. The Patriot air defense system transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces includes a control station, a radar installation, eight launchers and more than 60 missiles.

In addition, Germany, in the next batch of arms supplies to Kyiv to repel Russian aggression, provided nine Bandvagn tracked all-terrain vehicles, eight Zetros universal trucks, three remote-controlled mobile systems for mine clearance and more than seven thousand 155-caliber artillery shells.

A few days earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz once again confirmed that Germany would not stop supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russian invasion, noting that the fighting was far from over. “This war will obviously not end so quickly. It is therefore important that we are able to do what is necessary for a long time,” said the Chancellor.

Berlin handed over Patriot to Kyiv according to agreements

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced his intention to transfer to Ukraine the second Patriot air defense system available to the Bundeswehr at the beginning of October 2023. The fact that Ukraine first of all needs to strengthen its air and missile defense, especially in anticipation of the expected massive winter attacks by the Russian Federation on energy infrastructure, was previously repeatedly pointed out by both Pistorius and Scholz – including during discussions about the supply of Taurus cruise missiles to Kyiv .

The delivery of the Patriot air defense system occurred after the second group of Ukrainian Armed Forces military personnel completed training in working with the anti-aircraft missile system in Germany in early December. More than 70 Ukrainian military personnel took part in the training courses.

Ukrainian Armed Forces: Patriot successfully shoots down Russian Kinzhals

At the beginning of May 2023, the first reports appeared that the Ukrainian Armed Forces managed to shoot down a Russian hypersonic Kinzhal missile over the Kyiv region with the help of the Patriot air defense system. This event refuted Russian propaganda claims about “unbreakable” Daggers.

A few days after this, Russian forces carried out a massive attack on Kyiv, which included, among other things, eight Daggers. Among the targets of the attack was one of the Patriot air defense systems located in Kyiv. According to statements by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, during the attack one of the complex’s launchers was damaged, but not destroyed.

At the end of September 2023, the speaker of the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Yuriy Ignat, said that the Ukrainian military, using Patriot air defense systems, had already managed to shoot down 15 Kinzhal missiles and dozens of other ballistic missiles launched by Russian forces. Ukraine has at least six such systems at its disposal, including the one just delivered by Berlin. Two of them were previously supplied by the United States, two by the Netherlands, and another by Germany.
