British military intelligence said that today the Russian grouping of troops in Ukraine consists mainly of poorly trained mobilized Russians and uses mostly outdated equipment – this is a significant difference from the situation that was at the beginning of a full-scale invasion.
This was reported by the British Ministry of Defense.
Intelligence noted that “on paper” the Russian Joint Group of Forces in Ukraine is organized in the same way as during the invasion 446 days ago. It probably still consists of more than 200,000 military personnel, organized into about 70 combat regiments and brigades, divided into five groups of troops.
However, in practice the situation is different. In February 2022, the Russian army consisted of professional military personnel, was largely equipped with fairly modern equipment and underwent regular training, aiming for complex joint operations.
Now, according to British intelligence, the Russian forces are predominantly made up of poorly trained mobilized reservists and increasingly rely on outdated equipment, with many Russian units seriously understrength. The army of the Russian Federation regularly conducts only very simple operations based on infantry.
“It is highly unlikely that the grouping of Russian troops in Ukraine has managed to create a large, capable mobile reserve to respond to new operational challenges,” according to the UK.
It is also unlikely that the Russian army will be able to effectively link large-scale military operations along the entire 1,200-kilometer front line, intelligence added.
